“In the memos, both sent this week, Kilar and Sarnoff address what the former calls "public reports regarding patterns of unacceptable behavior." In his memo, Kilar writes that he is both "concerned and disappointed in" recent stories about the company and adds, "this email is to share what we will be doing about it." The newly installed WarnerMedia leader — Kilar was named CEO on April 1 after a successful run at Hulu as its founding CEO — adds that the company has hired a "third party" to review its production business, will be recirculating its Standards of Business Conduct internally and with current and upcoming business partners, and is encouraging employees to report unacceptable conduct.
He says that WarnerMedia may, as a result of its review and reaffirmation of its business conduct standards, uncouple from companies and individuals that do not uphold them. So I’m sorry if you feel like I’m not fighting for you. Because you see me writing novels on my time off. But I am the person who made a deal with god, to have a planet I could rest on, because I have been working my ass off in the Astral Plane Wars, since the day I got abducted from Ariana.
I’m sorry if our son, your REAL husband, wanted Kaos instead of me. Kaos has been through a lot of abuse, and I am the only person who has done anything at all to rehabilitate her. She will not be coming back. She is staying in heaven, where I placed her, for the purpose of her personal healing.
Now if you don’t mind, I need top learn how to not “save the world”, so that the population of Earth can learn to do it for themselves, instead of being dependent on other people.
I would prefer to retire with my wife, YOU. But you’ve gone off and married the most abusive prick in the Monarch Program, who dies in the next three years. So I’m going to wait out the next three years, waiting for that fucker to die, so I can marry you. Not to mention, I’m also waiting to see if a UFO comes down either to forcibly remove and abduct me with the intention of imprisoning me and using me to commandeer planets, or if comes down to pick me up and bring me to the OverSoul Termination I requested in the Arcturian Sector of the galaxy. Because there’s really no point staying on a planet with a wife, a husband, and huddle of kids who don’t remember me. And instead of doing that, I’m the only person standing between the people who want to annihilate them, and the population which is currently already annihilating itself. I am the one who is trying to fix other people’s problems. And it’s getting to the point where I have to walk away for my own well-being. I’m supposed to be off-duty or Exterminated. Not physically procreating. Not saving the world. Not teaching people how to resurrect lost souls. Or how to cycle souls back into a planet. If separated from their partner for more than two days, one of the partner dies, the other partner soon follows.

Dammit. With Taylor. Characterizing QA Simultaneously with Taylor. My bad.
Hello all, and sorry about the pretentious title. Really couldn't think of anything else. Before we begin I just wanted to say a quick thing. There is nothing inherently bad or problematic about making QA a full character in your story, nor is this post meant to shame anyone who does. Instead, this post is intended as a bit of an analysis on a common pitfall that I’ve seen many writers fall into that - in my personal and subjective opinion - makes their stories much less interesting. Now that we’re clear on that, let’s get started.

I. What do I mean “characterizing?”

By characterizing I do not mean just personification, or the author drawing brief parallels between the shard’s algorithmic activity and some form of human or sapient activity. I mean that the author has decided to craft QA - whether from the very beginning or along the way through the story - into some level of actual character that is separate from Taylor enough that the audience can differentiate (sometimes roughly) between the two. There are many, many different stories across all Worm fanfic sites that decide to characterize QA like this in one way or another, however they typically (there are exceptions of course) end up in one of two subcategories:

  1. The Puppeteer: QA is given or develops a personality/character while Taylor is dead or functionally dead (e.g. Administrative Mishap).
  2. The Partner: QA is given or develops a personality/character while Taylor is alive, and the two interact and often even ‘share’ a ‘headspace’ (e.g. Copacetic).

In both of these subcategories it is common for the audience to be able to point at a thought, action, or what have you and think to themselves “that’s QA acting, not Taylor.” In the first subcategory that’s usually every action taken by Taylor’s body. That makes sense of course, she’s at least functionally dead in that scenario.

In the other subcategory the line can be more blurry, sometimes intentionally, sometimes not. To combat this (or, sometimes, to show the growth of the relationship and familiarity between the two) and more clearly delineate the separation between Taylor and QA - and therefore more explicitly characterize them both - the author will make the two have ‘meetings’ or ‘conversations.' Some form of active and deliberate communication between the two besides intrusive thoughts. This is a fairly common, but very effective, trope that serves as an example on what I mean when I say characterize the two separately. But this scenario as a whole can encounter some problems that we’ll look at here in a moment.

This analysis/pitfall breakdown will be focusing on subcategory two: The Partner, and the implications therein.

II. The Body and the Thesis

Characterizing two characters (blegh, repeat words) that share the same body can be difficult to pull off effectively. Doubly so if only one of those characters can interact with the world around them and the other is an interdimensional machine learning algorithm that accidentally stumbled into sapience. The major threat of this subcategory of characterization is that, in an effort to more effectively characterize QA or as a direct result of characterizing QA to start with, Taylor’s agency will be compromised/drastically reduced, and the story will be much less interesting for it.

Most stories out there focus on the world in a way that is familiar to us. That is to say, worm fanfics don’t focus on a shard protagonist exploring shard life problems in interdimensional shard space. They focus on Taylor, or Armsmaster, or an OC cape or civvie interacting with the world and the characters in it, and stories in The Partner subcategory follow this trend as well. Because of this trend, and the fact that Taylor is alive and thinking inside this subcategory, Taylor is the more central character between her and QA. She is, after all, the only one that can interact with the world and the characters directly.

To compensate for this many authors of stories that fit into The Partner subcategory will relegate a massive chunk of fun problem solving or power usage to QA’s character in order to give her something to do. To not make QA feel extraneous as a character. After all, if it’s doing nothing but power things then why is it a character? This is, in and of itself, is a kind of flawed logic.

Let’s take a look at a specific story as an example.

Undying Scarab is a Worm/WoW crossover fic that has Taylor resurrected as an undead mage and locked inside The Scourge. For those unfamiliar with how The Lich King and The Scourge work, the long and short of it is that there is a sort of hierarchy of mind control depending on the sapience and power level of the undead. You’ve got all the canon fodder being controlled by sapient but weak mages, those weak mages controlled by more powerful liches, and on and up until you reach the Lich King who controls the minds of the Scourge as a whole (less directly than you might be thinking, but not by much).

Now that that basic explanation is out of the way we can examine this story with this compromised agency pitfall in mind.

At Taylor’s first main conflict with an extremist Light group called the Onslaught - a specific tasking from Kel’Thuzad himself - she comes up with a pretty cool (heh) plan to ride a collapsing glacier into the bay as a landing craft. From there she breaks the infamous spell preventing Onslaught resurrection that not even Kel’Thuzad could break inside about two hours. This gets her noticed and she nabs an apprenticeship with an extremely powerful lich. She thrives, processing through magical teachings super super fast - far faster than anyone the lich can think of. After that, she’s tasked with creating a fortified port and goes off to slaughter some Night Elves and forest critters and rip their souls out (real high level necromancy shit). There’s still more left (not much), but first, a quick tangent for context.

This whole time Taylor is being actively mind-controlled by both Kel’Thuzad and the Lich King. Both are powerful characters, the LK extraordinarily so. What this manifests as is a one-minded and almost sociopathic drive to follow orders and serve the LK and Kel. There has been one (maybe two) moments of thought through the whole story where Taylor comes close to recognizing this before the power of suggestion reasserts itself and puts her brain on track.

In the most recent chapter, all of a sudden, she breaks the LK’s and Kel’s mind control. Without any preamble or leadup. It’s just gone. That shit is mega powerful, and she broke it casually on what seems like the first “try” - for lack of a better term.

Only, she didn’t.

Throughout these chapters Taylor has been having regular meetings and conversations with QA. In these meetings Taylor will pop in and give QA a task to do (decrypt this spell, analyze this type of magic, help me cast bigger, soul-ier death magic), QA will snark at her, and then Taylor will pop out. As a result of these taskings, Taylor herself hasn’t accomplished much of anything through this whole story.

Breaking that unbreakable spell? QA did it after Taylor walked around long enough to gather data for it. Studied peerlessly and explored every aspect of bettering her abilities - as we have seen her do and as one of her major character strengths/flaws - to grow as a mage? Nah, Taylor just asked QA to study the magic for a bit until QA told her how to cast spells better, if QA didn’t basically cast them itself. Break the mind control of two extremely powerful beings through months of work or an emerging consciousness or a niggling morality that culminates in a wonderful moment where she refuses an order and everything comes crashing back down on her? Nope, QA just decided she would break it about a month ago because it was tired of a Taylor with no moral compass.

The only thing Taylor herself has accomplished is to come up with some neat plans of attack two times and kill one larger force. It’s...kind of boring, but it took me some thinking to pin down why.

To be clear, I don’t mean to trash Undying Scarab. It’s a wonderful story that is leaps and bounds the best Worm/WoW crossover in my opinion. It’s got some really good moments and some really neat OC’s and I think it’ll go somewhere genuinely interesting.

That said, it has this problem bad.

The thing is, when you characterize Taylor’s power as a wholly separate character from Taylor herself, then any accomplishments Taylor makes with ‘her’ power are not hers anymore. They are QA’s. QA is the shard, QA controls the power, QA does the infinitely scalable multitasking, QA does the exotic problem solving and calculations. Taylor really struggles in this scenario to become or feel like more than a data input device or - at worst - a vessel.

This is where the flaw in that logic I mentioned comes in. Authors try to rectify QA's limitations or justify its existence by giving it a bunch of cool power problems to solve. However those are already QA's domain anyway. They're not taking moments from Taylor to give to QA (which is, to be clear, bad), those things already belonged to QA. And cool moments and neat problems to solve are not justifications for a character to exist, especially when Taylor would have handled those scenarios fine on her own.

Undying Scarab shows all of this more blatantly than others because Taylor has no familiar powers anymore. No bug control or human control. Her power - for lack of a better term - is to be lucky enough that QA is connected to her. That she can talk to QA and ask it to do things for her or analyze collected data.

Now you might say that isn’t that just kind of what it’s like/means to have powers in Worm? Powers are, after all, a result of shards latching onto hosts and doing the processing for them, so it’s kinda the same, right?

Not really. In most Worm fanfics QA - or whatever shard Taylor has - doesn’t really get a character at all. They’re a power and just a power. Because of that lack of characterization the power is part of the host’s character, not the shard’s character. How the host utilizes it and how it manifests are that character’s own, and nobody else's.

The same is not true for when the shard is characterized separately from the host.

There is another story that falls into this subcategory that I will examine super fast (I know this is long already) to show how this dual characterization can be done better.

Copacetic is a fairly famous post-GM fanfic. It plops Taylor down on a new Earth and sends her off to college, anonymous, safe, traumatized, and without powers. The thing is she’s not actually without powers, and QA is still connected to her.

Just like in Undying Scarab the two have meetings and conversations that grow in length/depth and occurrence as the story goes on. Also like Undying Scarab, all the power stuff is still a part of QA’s burgeoning character, not Taylor’s. However, it works well in Copacetic because QA rarely compromises Taylor’s agency for characterization, actions, or through solving all of her problems. QA, being a young and recently conscious intelligence, looks to Taylor and their history together as sort of a model on how to exist, both in morality and goals. Just like Taylor (spoilers for Copacetic btw) QA wants to help while also having goals of its own that it acts on independently for a large part of the story. It does so through the only way it can: it’s powers.

QA ends up distributing shards and powers to people, learning slowly from Taylor how to do so smartly. But it is still QA’s decision and QA’s actions. Taylor is giving QA unwitting input and direction, but QA chooses to act on that input of its own accord. As the story progresses and the two get more familiar with each other QA’s power usage goes from being one sided, well intentioned, and mistranslated, to being an act of cooperation and mentorship that grows more competent and assured as the two grow to understand each other more. QA has agency in this story, and a means to act upon decisions it makes and data Taylor gives it beyond the scope of Taylor’s knowledge or intentions.

Taylor herself also has her own agency that is extant without being compromised or undermined by QA’s character. While QA grows and manages its powers and its understanding of the world, Taylor herself goes on to accomplish and grow entirely separate from the world of powers and shards and, therefore, QA’s ‘domain.’ She makes herself some honest to god friends, starts to heal, creatively problem solves through some really shit situations. She fights and studies and makes decisions entirely on her own that drive the plot forward both intentionally and unintentionally. Some of them work out, some of them don’t. Just like QA.

Overall, in Copacetic, the characterization works better - in my opinion - due to the clear line of agency that the two are split down, as well as much of the focus going to their evolving relationship. QA does not exist solely as a conscious deus ex machina - hell, it probably causes more problems than it solves honestly - nor is it stealing the show inadvertently as the author struggles to give it a purpose to justify its existence. Both Taylor and QA have separate means of agency and control: Taylor with her interaction with the characters and world physically, and QA through its interactions with the characters and world through its shard space. Further than that, the two meld their agencies and capabilities together through cooperation allowing them to interact with the world on both levels mutually and without making one or the other seem redundant.

III. Conclusion/TL;DR

Characterizing QA without compromising Taylor can be tricky. Without both a clear purpose for the character of QA existing as well as clear lines of delineation between both character’s agencies and methods of agency, it’s very easy to slip into the trap of one character in this symbiosis seeming extraneous. This is often because of the trap wherein characterizing QA separately from Taylor means that all accomplishments with powers that aren’t the result of cooperative and deliberate effort shown to the audience between the two characters are the property of the shard character, and not the host character. As a whole, think and plan before you decide on how you want to use QA in your story; if QA exists just as a terminal to plug data into and get a result out of then it is probably not necessary to be more than that. Characterizing QA when it is not needed will nine times out of ten result in either Taylor or QA feeling extraneous. Obviously let me know if y'all agree or not, this is, at the end of the day, nothing more than my own opinion and analysis and I'm sure there are folk out there who disagree. Lemme know!

Hi! I have been working in an office since early this year, about a month after I was hired everything hit the fan with covid and am now looking to jump ship as everything is getting ready to be seemingly a lot worse, and I need some advice on how to go about quitting in this unique situation.
TLDR: I've already decided I wanna leave my job for reasons detailed below, but I'm the only employee period for my office which is gonna be sold 2 months after I intend to leave. I know this is gonna leave my boss/the owner in a bind so I need some help on how to leave.
Some background, I'm working currently in an industry I've been in for 5 years now, and while the work isn't the problem, I feel the environment definitely is. I am a part time worker and only work from the morning to mid afternoon every single day, this was a condition on my employment that was agreed on by all parties involved before I was even offered the position, I took the job in early Feb, and by April we were working from home due to the shut down. My boss/immediate supervisor has been gone essentially the entire time I've been his employee (not by choice so it's been unavoidable but that makes it harder) and for the time he was available to me I received very little training, for your info I was hired early Feb and by April he was gone, so about two months that I had him there to learn from but.. Didn't. Again this is an industry I know but a company I'm unfamiliar with, plus I am now essentially the only employee in his one office. He does own 2 separate offices for the one office type, and has another team member that runs one office and I would run the other. This means that really everything I've had to do up to this point I've had to teach myself how to do. Since I am familiar with the industry, I have to take my knowledge to the corporate team that oversees us and be step by step walked through the process and procedure for completing tasks or what have you, so tasks that would normally not take too long tend to consume a bigger portion of my day as I have to research just about everything I come upon to do per day. Also, come to find out from the other team member that they had requested me to shadow them for training purposes when I was first hired but my boss refused. So that's frustrating.
But what's become a bigger problem has been that the other team member seems to think that I will handle much more than I feasibly can with the time I am in office. This team member has been in the industry for well over 20+ years and has outlasted the prior few business owners, staying with the office as owners have changed. Again I am only here part time and sometimes ask for their help with completing some things that will trickle over my working hours as they are still available until closing time. Our boss had previously required both of us to check voicemails at least 2 times per day to verify customers were attended to promptly. I don't think since I've worked here the other team member has ever checked messages At All, least of all 2x per day. No biggie at first, we were on it and never really missed calls so there wasn't a lot to catch up on when I did get to them. So I would listen to them all, then pass the ones that were meant for their office or specifically asking for that person. But once working from home when only one line at a time were available, we started getting lots of voicemails per day, and since I had to spend a lot of extra time on any task they'd basically sit there til I had a moment to listen to and delegate the messages. I started emailing the messages along with a note saying they were building up on me and I needed help with checking them, to no avail. So aside from them not checking messages, when I sent them their messages they were also not responding to their voicemails either at all, or within a reasonable time frame, so customers spent a lot of time on trying to reach us and being upset that they never heard back. This continues to be an ongoing problem. On top of seeming to duck messages, they will duck the calls if they recognize it to be someone they know are waiting to hear from them. Which more often than not results in my having to take care of a problem with an irate customer that was nothing to do with me or my office, and often is a complex problem that will again require much more of my time and effort to deal with than if that team member had dealt with it to begin with. Most notably, I am now fielding concerns over issues that were brought specifically to the team members attention since at least 2019, which you may recognize is before I was even employed here, so there are Very complex problems that have fallen into my lap as I had the misfortune of actually answering the call when they've come through. Best as I can I try to go ahead and refer them back to them as they messed up initially, but find that they'll just... Ignore the email. Then the issue becomes urgent and I absolutely Have to deal with it at that time.
The team member also insists on being absent through much of my work day, oftentimes with no explanation to me. I don't mind covering for them as they've always been flexible with me when I have needed it due to health. But the problem is they will go offline randomly throughout the day, which essentially makes them unreachable since we do work from separate locations, with no explanation. They will also take a lunch break, which is supposed to be an hour long affair, and then remain offline for 30-40-50 minutes past that hour, leaving me to deal with everything while they are gone. They previously had an injury that left them slightly handicapped, and used that to again disappear throughout the day and I would be there to deal with the fallout. Now they are attempting to get new team members in their office, and so the excuse of choice is that they are training the new hire. Which I understand and am glad about, but I am still only able to take care of one thing at a time and if I am on a call and others are coming in, I don't think it's right that they say they are training when the customer with a concern should take precedence. Especially since taking a call is a good way to either demonstrate how to deal with the problem on hand, or gives the new hire a chance to practice what they've already learned. So again, all the incoming fires come down to me. As I said I don't mind covering but I really wish they'd give me the courtesy of telling me when they left and that I'd be on my own, and how long I can anticipate to be on my own.
Being that my boss is gone there is no immediate supervision, and neither of us has seniority over the other in any way that matters. The boss does have a co-owner but the co-owner is truly just an investment partner and has no experience in the industry and so has no bearing over what goes on in the business. This plus the fact that when I have needed their attention on anything, they also tend to blow me off with no consideration to telling me why they were not intending to come through. They have previously said they would come to my office to help me deal with a concern, the whole day went by and I didn't hear anything in the way of even an excuse, and they wound up coming by the next day when it wasn't urgent anymore. This also recently happened with a service tech that came to my office expecting to meet with the co-owner, who had not let me know they'd be coming by, and did not even bother to show for the appt, and so the tech was told to take direction from me, again nothing he gave me a heads up on and did not give an excuse for his absence to the tech, which felt highly unprofessional. So it seems between the remaining employee and the co-owner there isn't an ounce of courtesy toward me between them.
So, now that you have a fair idea what I'm up against, here's my immediate problem. Our offices are up for sale as my boss's contract is being terminated, which he's known about for X amount of time, well before I was brought onboard. Currently they are both owned by the same person, but with the termination they will be split and sold to new owners piecemeal. Currently myself and the team member can work things from eitheor office, but coming soon they will not be. The other office sale will close before mine does, but I am hoping to not wait that long to make the jump. I have been applying like crazy and have already attended a few interviews. One issue I'm finding in interviewing is them asking when I anticipate to start, which I don't know as I don't know what quitting is gonna look like to my boss, as in, what it will do to his business as the sale would not close for at least 2 months After I am hoping to leave. I understand the situation is precarious and there's no real options for them at this point, but the fact of the matter is it's been clearly demonstrated to me that I am not being valued and its affecting my mental and physical health so I need to make other arrangements. I do feel bad leaving them in the lurch at this point, mostly for my actual boss's sake as he seems to be a real nice guy and has always been flexible with my needs, but he's not running anything now and won't be any longer so I have no loyalty to the office.
I don't know how to go about letting them know I have to leave, especially given that I am fully aware of what this could do to the business at this time of transition. So any advice on how to approach giving my notice, as well as how to deal if they attempt to guilt me about my leaving would be greatly appreciated. We made a lot of mistakes (still am) along the way, but we’re in a much better place after learning from them and constantly putting ourselves out there. In hopes of shining some light and helping others, we decided to make a comprehensive guide for university students – based on our knowledge/experiences - on how to start your successful CS Career (or gain the wisdom to avoid CS altogether, more on this later).
rishiss Background: I am a 4th year student at UC Irvine majoring in Software Engineering. I am an incoming Software Engineer at a F100 company (received return offer after interning this summer). Before that, I interned at an R & D center for space, a small cloud company, and a small IT company. I have a 3.65 GPA, won a few awards at startup competitions/hackathons, and remain pretty active in my schools CS organizations.
chaitu65c Background: I’m a 4th year student at UC Irvine majoring in Computer Science. I’m currently a SWE Intern at a Unicorn and just wrapped up my 2nd internship at a Live Streaming Company(you can most likely tell who they are if you browse my history LOL). Before this, I interned at my school’s IT department, did research under a professor, and worked on a few small startups that other UCI students were building. I have a 3.3 GPA, won some awards along rishiss and was pretty active in my school’s CS clubs.
Disclaimer: “But rishiss/ and chaitu65c, you don’t work at a Big N, go to a target CS school, why should I take your advice?” You’re absolutely right; we are, by no means, ‘up there’ like some other folks on this sub. And, you don’t have to take our advice! Simply close this tab and do whatever else you want 😊. Our intent is to guide and prepare uni students for a CS career they enjoy, not work at Big N or get the highest TC. Life is much more than a dick-measuring contest, and the earlier you learn that the better.

Is CS Right For Me?

The way we see it, there’s 3 types of people pursuing CS.
  1. Those who know CS isn’t for them – They’re in it for the money, to appease their parents, for a minorequirement, some external factor. They hated programming while taking the introductory CS course and just try to get done with their class/degree ASAP.
Advice: The majority of people who fall under this usually burn out quickly, as they aren’t motivated enough to learn the material and to apply themselves. This usually leads to them cheating and getting kicked out of their major, minor, or university altogether. Even if you manage to earn a degree, we've seen a large number of these folks endure a 'pre-mature' mid-life crisis or simply get fired from their jobs. Before you even start this major, you should definitely understand that this isn’t going to be easy, and you do have to put in a lot of effort to succeed. If this isn’t your cup of tea, definitely look into switching into another major you like.
Some folks are really passionate about technology, but don't want to pursue an entire Computer Science major or see themselves as Software Engineers. That's completely ok! Try looking into related majors or minors. We know many students who switched from CS to majors like Informatics, Business Information Management, and Economics and are thriving in tech-related roles like Data Analytics, Product Management, UI/UX Design, and Technical Recruiting. CS is not (and should not be) for everyone, and there is no shame in having the wisdom quit and move on.
  1. Those who don’t know if CS is for them – Where most of the CS community is IMO. These folks (like me, rishiss) are riddled with something called Imposter Syndrome: “the constant feeling of not being good enough or knowing enough to do your job well.”
Advice: For students, really take the time to learn and be open to anything you go through. Try sticking it out until you've taken a Data Structures course, one of the harder, more important courses out there. If you're not understanding the material or just aren't having fun with it, it’s definitely ok to switch majors/careers. Otherwise, CS just might be the career for you! Give it your best shot!
Admittedly, it's hard to provide stronger insight to overcoming Imposter Syndrome, as I am afflicted by it as well. For me, my IS derives from constantly comparing myself to others and confusing inexperience with incompetency. As such, I continue to work and focus on myself and take baby steps towards smaller goals I set out for myself. Knowing that I've put the effort to improve myself by just 1% everyday has made me a lot more confident.
  1. Those who know for a fact CS is for them – The diamonds in the rough. Learning and practicing CS material gives them a euphoric high.
Advice: Broaden your scope and learn new areas of CS! Who knows, you might find another new field that you really want to work in. Other than that, definitely make new friends regardless of whether they’re a CS major or not. Even try pursuing other hobbies like weightlifting, reading, dancing, or even public speaking. Don't limit yourself!

Freshman Year

We recommend not taking more than 3-4 classes in your first quartesemester, as you shouold keep an ample amount of time to go to professional/social events, make new friends and hang out with them, and pursue your interests.
We've seen a lot of freshmen (and upperclassmen) CS folks get cooped up in their dorm rooms playing video games and watching TV. We understand that these two are a passion for many, but please be cautious to not get consumed by them.
You have the privilege of pursuing higher education, making valuable connections/memories, and setting up your CS career in the trajectory you want. This year is the best year to take advantage of all that university has to offer; make the most of it.
One of the best ways to get involved in your school’s/region’s CS community is by joining clubs like ACM and WICS and participating in hackathons (see ‘Hackathon’ section below). Try pursuing internships and positions in these organizations and events as well!
One, major issue we see with freshmen (even upperclassmen) is their ignorance on all the avenues available in the CS Industry. So we’ve tried to narrow it down (not exhaustive).

As a freshman, definitely take the time and see if you can picture yourself doing any of the listed fields. You should open yourself to all facets of CS and not just the “hot field” like Data Science and Machine Learning. Choosing a field because it’s “exciting” will usually lead to bad results as usually, other people are thinking just like you and will lead to over-saturation.
Our recommendation is to select the top 5 fields that have piqued your interest and experiment with the field. For example, if you are interested in Mobile App Development, try learning how to build an Android app from the ground up. A simple weather app or alarm clock is completely suitable for a first project/prototype. This lets you understand what skills you would need for this field and can serve as a forecast as to what your career would look like.
You should definitely look for an internship. Ignore the people that tell you to wait until you’re a junior, as it’s going to be very hard to get an internship if you don’t have any experience. Common places that most students don’t realize are available are usually IT departments at your school and even research with professors. Researching is highly recommended as you can definitely learn more about a field you can be interested in and if you’re interested in graduate school, that’s going to be a letter of recommendation that you can ask for.
If you’re considered a minority in Computer Science, look into first and second year internship programs as they’re meant to help you succeed. Here’s some programs that come to mind:

Facebook University
Another way to get internships is to research into smaller companies in your area. If the company is very small (<100 employees), consider reaching out to the CEO on LinkedIn. They might be able to help you! Also, take advantage of university recruiting websites like Handshake to see companies that directly hire from your school. Sophomore Year

Now that you have basic programming knowledge, create your own website or GitHub account and start contributing to them with small personal projects. Nobody expects you to make a full-stack MERN project hosted and scaled on AWS at this stage. Focus instead on clean code, learning a framework or two on a language you like, and creating a small, robust feature. Grow from there!
If you weren’t able to find an internship/research opportunity as a freshman, community involvement, projects, and hackathons become especially important, as they are a great way to make you stand out on your resume and to recruiters when you reapply. As you brush up on your skills, apply again, and try your luck out.

Data Structures and Algorithms

In addition, you are most likely to take a Data Structures and Algorithms course this year. Make sure you are focusing on this class and writing good notes; you will need this knowledge when interviewing for internships and full-time jobs in the near future. Junior Year

As a junior, companies are more willing to hire you for an internship, as they are likely to convert you into a full-time employee after graduating. This transition process is much easier than interviewing, and they'll usually offer you a higher compensation package if they want to convert you to a full-time employee. As you now should have knowledge of Data Structures and Algorithms, we highly recommend looking into coding interview prep sites like LeetCode and HackerRank or purchasing a prep book like CTCI or EPI (advanced).
Continue to attend hackathons, remain active in clubs/organizations, and grow your portfolio.
Classes will be much harder; expect the time for completing projects to double and the content covered to be much more difficult. We recommend taking no more than 2-3 upper-division CS courses and balancing your load with 1-2 GE classes. You should not be taking more than 16 units (assuming 4 units per course).
Start to get an idea of what field in CS you would like to pursue. Research what it takes to be successful in that field. You can do so by looking up job postings with that title on LinkedIn and looking at the requested skill set or take a look at Roadmap.sh. If you want to learn more about a related skill set and your school doesn't offer a course, consider picking up a class on udemy.com.

Senior Year

Focus heavily on your senior capstone, project classes, etc. as they're the last thing you can put on your resume before applying for full time. By now, you should have at least 3 polished, working projects on your GitHub that you can easily talk about with your recruiter. Preferably, they're aligned with the CS field you wish to enter.
If you were able to get a return offer from an internship, congrats! However, don’t immediately sign the offer. Once you have an offer, you should still try to interview at companies that you’re interested in by the deadline of the time to accept the offer. A good way of doing this is to reach out to a University recruiter for that company and explain the deadline you have. Usually, they’re really helpful and can potentially help skip interviews that you were supposed to do!
In addition, if your friends were able to intern at places you’re interested in, definitely ask for a referral or to send your resume to their recruiter. This usually reduces the risk of being ghosted by that company and increases your chances of getting hired!
Once you finally sign, definitely take the time to relax and enjoy. Just make sure you pass your classes and stay out of trouble

How do I succeed in these classes?

rishiss: You’re more than likely coughing up hundreds, if not thousands, to attend university. It makes no sense to not take full advantage of the course and course staff.
The way I take notes: I learn from examples; I want to enter my code into the IDE to see what happens. I do a three way split; Google Docs on the left, IDE on top right and terminal (to compile, see output, make new file, etc) on bottom left. I note down the date and topic of the lecture and write questions I have in the comments on Docs. I make sure to highlight important information and possible test questions. I even share the link with friends!

In the quarters where I followed the steps above, I never got a grade lower than an A-.

Dealing with Bad Professors

During your time in college, you’re likely going to have at least one bad professor that might make it worse if you have to go to class. If that’s the case, it’s definitely fine to not go to class (as long as it’s not mandatory). However, if you do decide not to go, you must make sure you learn the material, so you won’t be behind on the coursework and studying for tests. In addition, you should be doing something productive on the side. If you don’t go to class and spend the time watching Netflix or playing video games, you’re losing time that you can spend on something that might be fun and can help you in the long run.

You can take Graduate Courses!?

chaitu65c: A highly underutilized set of courses you can take would be graduate courses. Graduate courses are usually very specialized in certain fields. If you were able to take all the undergraduate courses you wanted and still have spare classes to fill out, I'd recommend researching into taking Graduate courses! They’re a good way to build out your specialization and learn new, cool stuff! In addition, if you’re looking for classes to reach the required number of CS courses needed, your CS department might allow you to make the course count towards your degree!

Projects

They're super important.

How do I succeed in class projects?

Personal Projects and your CS Career

rishiss: Projects are your saving grace, especially if you are lacking work experience. They show technical aptitude, willingness to take initiative, and leadership. I’ve seen people with only projects on their resume get positions at the Big N. Projects are good ways to expand your knowledge of CS as the possibilities are endless! It is best to have a variety of projects dealing with a variety of technologies. As such, you can open yourself up to more positions and have more talking points during the interview.
I tend to edit the ‘Project’ Section of my resume with relevant projects and technologies. For instance, if I made a full stack web application and applied to a DevOps organization, I would highlight my AWS, CI/CD, and Terraform experiences more than my React/Node js work.
It is recommend the project is about something that motivates you and are passionate about e.g. video games, movies, books, sports, etc., as it is very easy to give up half way due to stress or lack of motivation/interest.
Like anything else in Computer Science, projects require you to break it down into smaller pieces. Start with the end in mind and draw out the intended architecture/functionalities. Start with what you know and research on the parts you don't know after that. You will be using these skills often in industry for any project/feature planning.
Spending 15-30 minutes a day is all you need to make a successful personal project. Don't make excuses and get coding!

Open Source Contributions

If you’ve ever noticed popular github repositories such as torvalds/linux, these are repositories where people from all over the world can report issues with it and someone can fix it. If you are able to make a contribution to a huge open source repository, it looks really good on your resume.

Hackathons

What are Hackathons?

Hackathons are large scale coding events, where students from around the area come together and collaborate - usually in teams of 4 (but you can go solo or with a partner!) - to build some software. Companies like Amazon, Northrop Grumman, Google, and Twilio sponsor awards related to best use of their technology. After 24 - 48 hours of intensive coding, participants submit their projects, whether it be an Android video game, Chrome Extension, productivity web app, etc. Submissions are shared with the companies and other hackathon organizers, where they select the best projects and award teams with swag like keyboards, gift cards, and even summer internships at their company.
Participating in hackathons are one of the best ways to hone your coding skills, network with companies and other students, and get free comfy T-shirts. It is also one of the best ways to gain industry knowledge, as representatives from these companies and hackathon organizers create numerous workshops and answer any questions you may have. Winning awards at these hackathons are also great resume boosters and talking points during interviews.
The biggest hackathon organizer is Major League Hacking. Visit their website, and you can see all the hackathons (remote or local) they are partnered with. Make to be on the lookout for application release dates from the hackathons and apply early.
With Covid, you may miss out on the free goodies and the in-person networking with students and professionals. However, most hackathons are accepting many more applicants due to it being virtual/remote this year.

What Should I Do At Hacakathons?

Take advantage of the resources available at hackathons. You’re attending a mini CS conference and should be, besides coding, networking with professionals, learning about the different companies, attending workshops, asking technical/non-technical questions to mentors, and getting as much free shit as you can get. Besides T-Shirts, companies give out vouchers to their services, applications to their internship and full-time positions, pillows, notebooks, water bottles, sweaters, and even backpacks.
If you’re looking to get an award, judges at hackathons care a lot about the pitch and the idea rather than the actual execution of the idea. Having an idea beforehand is also helpful, so you can spend your time focusing on the MVP.

Friends and Networking

chaitu65c: I think it’s definitely useful if you have two different friend groups: One dedicated to career and Non-Career Group.
Career Group - When making a friend group dedicated to career, try to be the dumbest person in the group, you’re definitely going to learn a lot from them as you soak up knowledge! Best ways of meeting friends who are career-driven can be through major specific orientation (actually how I met rishiss), courses, major related clubs, etc.
Non-Career Group - While having a group that motivates you for your career is important, it’s also important to have another friend group that can help you relax and to enjoy your time! A really good way to find these friend groups can be anywhere from your hall to General Education courses, social clubs like Circle K, fraternities/ sororities(if that’s your cup of tea) and others!
This is what has worked for us; no need to follow this exact format.

Resume

rishiss: Here are the few take-aways on writing a resume that gets through the ATS.

Searching for Internships

Searching for internships in CS is really different and harder from searching for internships in other professions. CS internship interview processes are often longer and much more technical on what you have learned as a CS major. We've prepped 2-3 months beforehand on CS concepts, whiteboarding, etc.

Timeline

This timeline primarily focuses on large, non-government/defense companies or competitive startups. This also assume you are applying for a summer internship.
August - September: Applications are opened to the public. Make sure to look out for positions and apply early, as most companies admit students on a rolling basis. A site that we used often is Apply.fyi. After applying, you may receive an automated (< 48 hours) invitation to complete an Online Assessment, consisting of multiple choice and/or coding questions about Data Structures, Algorithms, and Run Time Complexity. You will have usually 1-2 weeks to complete the assessment. Please that you may be rejected if you are not able to pass 90% of the questions on the assessment: Please also note that you may be instantly rejected due to things out of your control like years of experience, cancellation of internship, internal corporate issues, and more. Don't take rejections too seriously; just keep applying!
October - November: After passing the resume screen and the OA, you will be contacted by the company's recruiter for a phone screen. During the screen, you will probably be asked a few confirmation questions about your resume, sponsorship, years of experience with X, etc. and minor behavioral questions like what made you apply for this position, what are you pursuing outside of class, etc. You may also receive questions about your CS fundamentals e.g. what is a hashtable, whats the difference between a process and a thread, what is the runtime complexity of sorting a string, etc. As long as you're cool and confident (and not cringe/edgy), this part should be a breeze.
November - Mid January: If you made it through the two Thanos snaps, you will be invited to an onsite “Power-Day,” where interviewees attend 2-4 whiteboard interviews while being grilled on their technical skills and projects. Some companies make applicants go through a panel interview, where a team of 2-5 Software Engineers grill you on technical questions and your resume. You are often pampered with free travel, food, stipends, etc.
December - February: If you were deemed a good fit by the hiring committee, you will be extended an offer to intern at the company during the upcoming summer for 10-12 weeks. Remember, nothing is final until you receive an offer letter in your inbox. Some companies may also place you on a wait-list and offer you a spot if someone were to reject their offer letter.
For government orgs, defense companies, and smaller organizations, the recruiting season starts in February/March and usually ends in April and May. After applying online and passing the resume screen, you will usually be immediately pushed to an on-site interview. Most likely, you will be interviewing with your future boss/co-worker.
Please note that internships are not only offered in the summer, they are provided in the Fall, Winter, and Spring (rare) as well. The competition for these internships is usually lower, and the process usually starts 3-4 months beforehand.

How to get the Interview

Besides following resume tips, make sure to apply to as many places as you can. To get our first internships, we recall applying to approximately 250-300 places before we secured our internship plans for that summer. Also, if you do get ghosted, don’t take it personally, usually, university recruiters often spend so much time reviewing a lot of applications.
Other precautions to take to get noticed are to try attending career fairs if you can, you might be able to get an interview(worst case, free swag!). Other than that, try reaching out to upperclassmen or friends you know that interned and ask for referrals. It’s one of the best ways to get noticed!

What to expect

As part of the interview process, there’s 4 types of interviews that you should make sure you know.
Behavioral Interview: These interviews ask you questions about culture fit such as “Why are you a good candidate” and “Tell me about a time when you ...”
Coding/Technical Interview: These interviews ask you questions similar to what you see on Leetcode and Hackerrank. These interviews are designed to test your Data Structures and Algorithms knowledge.
System Design: System Design involves the interviewer testing your building to design a service/software and test your knowledge of understanding what things to use for the task and how you will integrate them together. You’re definitely not expected to know this and it’s not likely you’re gonna get asked this. Places that could ask you this are Unicorns, Trading Companies and Hedge Funds, and Big Established Companies.
Concurrency/Low Level Interviews: If the company’s biggest product involves low level principles such as networking principles and kernel stuff, there’s a possibility you can get asked this. Places that come to mind are hardware companies and trading firms.
Some companies may adopt only one of these interviews and some may adopt all.

How to Ace the Interview

It’s highly recommended that you look up the interview experiences that other students have faced so that you can potentially filter out companies with red flags and know what questions to expect. Common sources to search up on this would be Reddit (csMajors and cscareerquestions), Jumpstart (Relatively new portal for students), Glassdoor and maybe Blind (Aside from the toxic TC or GTFO culture, they do give good advice on interviews). With that said, here’s some advice we have when you approach each kind of interview we’ve seen.

Advice on Behavioral Interviews

Use the STAR method when describing your experiences. Being quantifiable with the impact of your actions will impress the interviewer.

Advice on Technical Interviews

Begin by reviewing your notes from the Data Structures and Algorithms class. Do not proceed further until you know how to implement these DS and As from scratch with the language of your choice(If you do know python, it’s recommended as there’s a lot of builtin features!). After doing so, we highly recommend a book like CTCI and EPI to gain a review on programming language details and your DS and As. Then, visit sites like LeetCode to practice real questions from major companies. A Facebook Engineer completed 600 LC problems and compiled the most important ones into a list here. During the interview, make sure to talk out loud about possible approaches and tradeoffs before whiteboarding. It is perfectly acceptable (often recommended) to ask the interviewer to ask questions about the problem and get clarification. Once you have an idea in mind and have talked about it with your interviewer, begin whiteboarding. While you talk about the final idea you want to use, write out pseudo code and comments about all the steps you need to implement in order to finish coding your solution. After that, start coding. Make sure to have proper function headers, syntax, spacing, classes/structs, imports, etc. After coding your solution, give a brief explanation and attempt to make it run with less space and in less time (if your solution is not as efficient as you think it can be).

Advice on System Design

These are somewhat hard to approach if you don’t have experience ever doing it. If you do have experience designing and building services in your spare time and as part of your work experience, definitely rely on your experience. An important thing is to definitely ask clarifying questions. There might be hidden requirements you didn’t think about that could drastically change the way you approach the solution.

Advice on Concurrency/Low level

Understand basic principles such as Processes vs Threads (A lot of people don’t know the difference!)TCP vs UDP and how to make an application thread safe. Other than that, it’s recommended that you familiarize yourself with basic OS concepts such as Deadlocks, locks that you can utilize to make an application thread safe, etc.

Searching for Full Time Jobs:

The big bucks.
The process for finding a Full-Time Job is usually very similar to finding an Internship. There’s three main differences are:
  1. Harder Questions. Ex: Google usually asks Leetcode Mediums to Hards + the special Leetcode Hard question that Google asks it’s applicants (they create a new one every year).
  2. More Rounds of Interviewing: For example, Microsoft makes interns do 2 rounds while New Grads do 4 rounds during the onsite part of the process.
  3. Compensation: Interns usually get an hourly rate and, possibly, a housing stipend. New grads, however, are given a yearly salary and, possibly, a sign-on bonus, stocks, and benefits e.g. health insurance, vacation days, etc.
The process for finding a Full-time Job won’t really change as much as finding an internship, but keep in mind that the bar is higher. This is probably the biggest reason why you should look into interning early; by getting an offer at the place you like, you don’t need to go through the daunting process of finding a full-time role.
Get as many offers as you can this time around, so you can negotiate and select the position, company, compensation, and location that works best for you.

Negotiation

Negotiation is a really powerful tool that you can use in the interview process, even as an intern. There’s a lot of guides to negotiation and we recommend Nick Singh’s guide (Look at his LinkedIn and newsletters) for more.

Final Thoughts

University is a probably the most important time of your life and a foundational block of your CS Career. Like any foundation, it must be sturdy and takes a tremendous amount and energy of time to develop. Take advantage of all the resources (like this one) you can get your hands on. Definitely learn from the mistakes people have made and make sure you don’t repeat the same mistakes.

2020.09.17 16:43 NastyLittleHobbitses I lost my 3yo cat Edward unexpectedly last week. His brother Alphonse is a constant reminder of the hole in my life he left behind and I'm struggling to accept he's just gone like that.

I'm having a hard time coping even though it's been a week, so I thought I would share here to get it out of my system.
I had a family dog growing up that died at 16-years-old, when I was 19. It was a very tough loss but he was old, and it made it a little easier to accept that it was his time. And he knew, I could tell, he was ready to go.
It took 7 years to feel ready to adopt again, after college and moving back home to an empty quiet house. We were looking for a dog at some shelters and had actually applied for one, when we happened upon a little grey cat in a Petsmart, partnered with a cat rescue organisation. We went to check him out at the store and see if he was right for us. I realised when my family was playing with him, there was another little guy, a black kitten, crouched in the corner in the back. I thought they just had let multiple cats roam around at once until I realised there were two description cards for the same kennel, and that this was his brother. He was much smaller, and very fearful of people, but curious enough to watch from afar.
When we went home, we discussed it and I said I didn't want to take just one because to me, it was clear the black kitten would fare better being kept with his brother because he was clearly anxious. I thought it would benefit him socially to be together, especially since a person before adopted the other two grey ones from this litter of 4. I didn't want him to be left behind.
My sister went ahead and adopted the grey cat, Alphonse, so I went back for Edward. Even if he wasn't what I intended, to this day I am grateful I went with my gut and my family came around to realise I was right, and that they were better off being together. It took a lot of hard work and patience but Ed really came out of his shell over time. While still smaller, he grew into a gorgeous playful cat, and while maybe not a lap cat to others, he was comfortable being pet, social, curious and extremely affectionate. He was my literal shadow. If I was home, he'd be at my ankles, following me around everywhere. He had a funny perpetual kitten-like meow if any noise came out at all, and I miss that little scream in the morning or coming home from work. He loved being held by me, kissed, cuddled. He is more relaxed and liked to nap more than Alphonse, who is high energy and squirmy. He really blossomed and we built a very close bond. I was so happy to give him some better quality of life than being afraid of everything and everyone all the time from underneath the bed.
Ed had a panic attack of some sort during a check up post-surgery after having some teeth removed, about a month and some ago. I took him to the emergency overnight, thinking it was the end, but he pulled through. A lot of money, a lot of medicine, blood work, xrays, the whole thing. He recovered almost perfectly, until one day he was breathing pretty hard. So I made another follow up in a weeks time, afraid of having a repeat of last time where he panics himself into an episode. He hated the vet, and with every visit there was a new negative association. I didn't know that would become my final week with him.
I didn't think as I handed him off to the vet that it would be the last time I saw him as I remembered him. I didn't think that morning would be the last time I held him, when he'd push his head into mine and purr so loudly into my ear. I didn't think coming downstairs that morning would be the last time he'd be mewing at my feet, or the last time he'd see his brother.
He passed on the xray table. They called me in to see the vet giving chest compressions to my lifeless kitten. I stood there and yelled at them for something to do, a way I can help, anything. And they didn't answer. I had to go outside, I couldn't watch. And they came to tell me he was gone, just like that. Something around his lungs, maybe a parasite of a tumour, something wouldn't allow him to get in air. Something that wasn't there a month before. And it caused him to seize and die right there.
I regret not staying in the room for him as he went because I was uncomfortable. I regret not ignoring the vet and just holding him when he was in the kennel because I was worried he'd jump out of my arms and go loose in the clinic. I regret not asking to put him back in the crate I brought him in, with the blanket he slept on every day and my sweater for comfort. I have been struggling this week with feeling like I let him down. The days have gotten easier to distract myself but at night, I can't shake the consideration that he was literally scared to death, and it was me that put him in that position. I robbed myself of at least having a diagnosis, time to digest, and the option to put him down at home in comfort if it was terminal when I had the chance.
I am so wrecked thinking that he was afraid and alone in his last moments. I took him out of a cold and unfamiliar situation before adoption, a stray who'd been tossed around the street, foster homes, and the adoption kennels, to give him a permanent safe space... and I let him die literally cold and alone and afraid on a table somewhere I knew he didn't want to be. Because I was worried I'd come home to find him dead one day if I didn't get him checked. Perhaps, that would have been more humane, to pass at home with his brother to comfort him. Maybe I should have let him be. I feel absolutely devastated that I spent 2.5 years earning his trust and him relying on me for safety and love, only to let him down. I wonder if he felt betrayed by me. I don't know if cat emotions are that complex, but I hate to consider him thinking I abandoned him like other people had before.
I loved him so much it hurts. I haven't stopped crying for a week. His brother is absolutely lost without him. His absence is so loud, his presence is so missed. We all look for him when we know he's not there. There no bell on his collar to ring. I'm cutting up Alphonses food for no reason, he has all his teeth. I'm over feeding him by accident. Alphonse sleeps with my every night which is unusual. I don't know how to reconcile with myself, I don't know how I can accept that it was Ed's time to go. He was only 3. He deserved better.
I hope I gave him a fighting chance. I hope it was as worth it for him as it was for me. I saw in him potential to be a great companion and a beautiful cat. It took a lot of convincing my family to see that same potential in him, that just because he wasn't immediately friendly and social, doesn't mean he can't be, and doesn't mean he doesn't deserve a home. And they grew to love him too, and he loved them. I don't regret a moment of his life here with me, he was such a good cat. My first pet to own myself. And my first to lose.

Historically, we all know mines have run into trouble with being friendly toward the environment. Today more than ever, a company's concern for the environment must be vocally expressed and physically acknowledged. If not, the reporters and media will bash Tesla for not being environmentally sensitive. Elon Musk understands this and is aware that the nickel company Tesla chooses must at least appear as if they are environmentally “sensitive". Vale’s website has information on how they are sustainable and conscious of the controversies surrounding the mining industry.

News Doesn't Care About Technical Analysis
No matter how good the TA setup is for $VALE, news does not give a FUCK about TA. If it has a catalyst to moon... moon it will.
Cash Flow
The increasing and regular cash flow has built a very strong balance sheet for VALE and the consistent high yield will keep the loyal investors around. In addition to this year's regular dividend, $VALE is paying investors an extra dividend of 1.63% on the same day as the regular. According to research firms such as CFRA, the management team has been very active and engaged to keep the company moving in the right direction despite COVID-19 setbacks and a decrease in steel demand.

$HNCKF (Giga Metals corp) a competing mining company fell 18.84% today after being in the news about potentially being a candidate for Tesla’s nickel demand. Currently, at a conservative rate, Giga’s mine would stop being able to satisfy Tesla’s Nickel needs by 2025, assuming they would be able to begin mining operations immediately. On the other hand, yesterday (Sept. 16), Vale announced that they had created buffers to reach production of 400 million metric tons of total mineral mining per year in a filing that was part of an investor tour presentation. Nickel is one of the five metals Vale mines.

After calculating a very conservative estimate of how much nickel Tesla would be needing in the future, these were the results… (see figure below)
With a conservative estimate of a $43 billion dollar contract, $43 billion minus the operating margin (38%)= $16.5 billion. This gives the stock 28% upside. The price target for $VALE is $15.36 with a 5% variance giving a low at $14.80 and a high of $16.00 Not to mention the stock market acts very irrational in times of hype, the stock could very well overreact to $20+CFRA’s current 12 month price target for VALE is $15.00, whom most likely have not anticipated Tesla news. (If they get the news, this thing will FLY based on what we have seen this year)

Background
NB Ridaz, formally known as Nastyboy Klick, are a Hip Hop/R&B group out of Phoenix Arizona. Started by MC Magic, the group became popular locally by selling their CDs at swap meets and making personalized songs of their hits for people. They dropped two albums under the Nastyboy Klick moniker, one of which had one of their most successful singles with “Lost In Love”. Their debut also had the hit “Down For Yours” featuring Roger Troutman, who laid down the chorus with his signature talkbox singing. That sound would become a staple in NB Ridaz’s future hits. With the name officially change to NB Ridaz, they dropped Invasion in 2001, with the hit song “Runaway” In 2004 they dropped NB Ridaz.com, their most successful album to date, spawning hits like “Notice Me” “So Fly” and “Pretty Girl”. The influence Roger Troutman had instilled on the group’s sound is especially prominent here, with the talkbox chorus on “Wishin on a Star” and “Pretty Girl” This album also served to promote their website NBRidaz.com, where they sold merchandise and promoted their personalized songs that fans can put requests for. Although the site is no longer active you are able to see remnants of the site if you use the wayback machine.
Intro
I wanted to preface by saying that the reason I chose this album was because it was huge among Hispanics/Latinos in the US. and in Latin America, but I feel like they are largely unknown to this forum and non-hispanic hip hop listeners. I realized I lived in a bit of a bubble when I overestimated their general popularity on this sub. Living in a large Mexican community, the album and songs like “So Fly” and “Pretty Girl” were inescapable and most girls I went to middle school with including my sister had a crush on MC Magic. I talked about them once in the DD a while back when someone brought up Soulja Boy’s influence by using the internet to blow up and being the supposed first one to really use the internet, and I mentioned how NB Ridaz were using their website to promote personalized songs before Soulja Boy was active, which was then downvoted and followed by a “Who?” response. Anyways after that and testing the waters by posting “Pretty Girl” (which was downvoted), I became aware of that bubble and how the album is not known to the general hip hop audience. To be fair, even when the album was in heavy rotation during release, I noticed it was more popular among girls than dudes, and this sub/website isn’t exactly known for their demographics in the women department.
Review
One thing about this album is that almost every single song has to do with love or intimacy, whether that be the pursuit and wooing of a new partner, cultivating and strengthening of relationships, or lamenting of past relations, probably why it was more popular with girls than dude.
The album kicks off with a forgettable intro followed by U Got Me Hot, which is just a fun song about meeting women at the club and a good track to kick off the album.

Next is Pretty Girl. Though it wasn’t the leading single on the album, it is probably the most popular song from this album after Notice Me. With a smooth beat reminiscent of 90’s G-Funk, and a chorus and verses backed up by the talkbox singing that they picked up from Roger Troutman, this song has everything that makes it both timeless and a callback to the group’s roots. My favorite part has to be MC Magic’s verse, as he blesses us by alternating his rhymes between English and Spanish seamlessly.

After Pretty Girl and, the album transitions to its raunchier side with the lead single So Fly. One small detail I always liked about this song is that each member comes in with a short intro setup before their verse starts, with Zig Zag and MC Magic singing their first lines before rapping, and the DJ Scratching on the beginning of Dos’s verse, I thought it was a pretty neat touch. Zig Zag’s verse is iconic too and etched in my childhood since my sister had this song on loop on her boombox.
I know, I been on the road and away from home
But I been fiendin' for you

And what I'm gonna do when I have you alone
You heard the message
On your cellphone, me sayin' "Daddy's home"

Next up Tu Eres, a love ballad sung entirely in Spanish. The lines are a bit cheesy, but since it’s a love ballad it’s expected. If you get serious with a Latina who’s in her late 20’s/early 30’s, you’ll get bonus points if you play this for her.

On Wishin’, the song revolves around getting hurt by being broken up with by an ex, but still wanting them back. Though it sounds great rapping and beat-wise, and the chorus is nice as hell, it’s my least favorite song on the album on subject matter alone. After that the album gets more upbeat on Playaz. Dope hook, classic beat, and great verses all around where NB Ridaz affiliates 'The Hav Nots' lay down some good verses.
The album then does a 180 with 4-Ever, a song about committing to be with your partner forever. The chorus features singer Angelina combined with the talkbox singing by the NB Ridaz. Though this is one of multiple tracks on the album that feature the talkbox singing chorus, and not even the only one that also features Angelina on the chorus, they still manage to get creative with it. Next up is Notice Me, which was probably the song that got the most radio play in my area and in general. While being the second song that has both Angelina and the talkbox singing chorus, it still manages to sound fresh and change from a theme of commitment to one of simping.
Until I Die is probably my favorite beat on the album, even with dope 90’s West Coast style beats of “Pretty Girl” and “Playaz”. Hearing this makes me wish NB Ridaz experimented more with guitars on their instrumentals. This song is different from the other love songs on the album in that it focuses on growth in partnership, from struggles to sacrifices couples would do for each other. Featured artist and long-time collaborator Big Gemini has a great verse on this as well

Sunshine features the same singer (Mary) who did the chorus on U Got Me Hot, and she easily steals the show on this. This song always reminded of a 90’s R&B ballad, and probably the only song on the album where I think Dos had the best verse. .
Not once not twice but your three times a lady

Ill be there for you lets make love in to memories
Your tender touch and your smile always get the best of me

Sunshine is followed by the Lil Ridaz skit, just an obnoxious skit of these two little kids breaking into MC Magic’s studio and rapping. Kinda wishing they cut this because it’s not great. The skit leads us into the next song, Bounce If You Wanna, that uses the same beat as the skit. Something weird I found in making this writeup is that not a single lyric website has this song correctly noted, as every site instead has the lyrics to the Lil Ridaz skit. I wanted to highlight Kid Frost’s verse because he was nice and it was iconic to have the first Mexican-American rapper to blow up on an NB Ridaz track. This doesn’t exist anywhere else so I might have mucked a few words

Southwest Ridaz is up next, and the album is just the group spitting cold hard bars. MC Magic shines as usual and alternate Spanish and English lines like he did on Pretty Girl, except with more hardcore rapping on this track. San Diego’s Mr. Shadow makes an appearance, who was also popular among latino hip hop listeners in the mid 2000’s, but who catered more to the gangster rap crowd.
MC Magic expands on how the group started in the skit Magic’s Custom CDs, where he recounts how his group were able to establish themselves by making personalized CDs for them and advertises how fans can use the website to request their own custom CDs, and as a bonus he even includes an example of a custom song he made using Lost in Love as a basis. The album’s closing track, Guess Who’s Back was always my guilty pleasure as a kid. Borrowing my sister’s CD of this album every now and then, this is the track I always skipped to since at the time I wasn’t feeling like hearing love or heartbreak songs, so this one holds a special place in my heart. With this and Southwest Ridaz, the group made it known they can drop bars when they wanted to and aren’t just a group that coasts on love ballads.
I didn’t mention the Cho and Lo skits, until now, but they are a series of skits on the album that have a radio duo ragging on each other. I used to like their banter when I was in middle school, but I’ve grown out of it since then
Conclusion
As I mentioned before, upon doing my research for my writeup, I found that I overestimated the group’s popularity and my perception of their popularity was warped because of where I and who I grew up with, being from a city on the west coast where there are more Mexicans than any other race. In spite of their popularity among Latinos with songs that have +10 million views on youtube, they never had an album chart on the Billboard 200, and even their most famous songs only peaked close to the bottom of the Billboard 100 charts. In spite of their lack of reach outside the Latino community, this album was huge for those of us who did grow up listening to it.

With our final school year beginning, we were reflecting on how lost and confused we were when we first started university. We made a lot of mistakes (still am) along the way, but we’re in a much better place after learning from them and constantly putting ourselves out there. In hopes of shining some light and helping others, we decided to make a comprehensive guide for university students – based on our knowledge/experiences - on how to start your successful CS Career (or gain the wisdom to avoid CS altogether, more on this later).
rishiss Background: I am a 4th year student at UC Irvine majoring in Software Engineering. I am an incoming Software Engineer at a F100 company (received return offer after interning this summer). Before that, I interned at an R & D center for space, a small cloud company, and a small IT company. I have a 3.65 GPA, won a few awards at startup competitions/hackathons, and remain pretty active in my schools CS organizations.
chaitu65c Background: I’m a 4th year student at UC Irvine majoring in Computer Science. I’m currently a SWE Intern at a Unicorn and just wrapped up my 2nd internship at a Live Streaming Company(you can most likely tell who they are if you browse my history LOL). Before this, I interned at my school’s IT department, did research under a professor, and worked on a few small startups that other UCI students were building. I have a 3.3 GPA, won some awards along rishiss and was pretty active in my school’s CS clubs.

Our intent is to guide and prepare uni students for a CS career they enjoy, not work at Big N or get the highest TC. Life is much more than a dick-measuring contest, and the earlier you learn that the better.

Is CS Right For Me?

The way we see it, there’s 3 types of people pursuing CS.
  1. Those who know CS isn’t for them – They’re in it for the money, to appease their parents, for a minorequirement, some external factor. They hated programming while taking the introductory CS course and just try to get done with their class/degree ASAP.
Advice: The majority of people who fall under this usually burn out quickly, as they aren’t motivated enough to learn the material and to apply themselves. This usually leads to them cheating and getting kicked out of their major, minor, or university altogether. Even if you manage to earn a degree, we've seen a large number of these folks endure a 'pre-mature' mid-life crisis or simply get fired from their jobs. Before you even start this major, you should definitely understand that this isn’t going to be easy, and you do have to put in a lot of effort to succeed. If this isn’t your cup of tea, definitely look into switching into another major you like.
Some folks are really passionate about technology, but don't want to pursue an entire Computer Science major or see themselves as Software Engineers. That's completely ok! Try looking into related majors or minors. We know many students who switched from CS to majors like Informatics, Business Information Management, and Economics and are thriving in tech-related roles like Data Analytics, Product Management, UI/UX Design, and Technical Recruiting. CS is not (and should not be) for everyone, and there is no shame in having the wisdom quit and move on.
  1. Those who don’t know if CS is for them – Where most of the CS community is IMO. These folks (like me, rishiss) are riddled with something called Imposter Syndrome: “the constant feeling of not being good enough or knowing enough to do your job well.”
Advice: For students, really take the time to learn and be open to anything you go through. Try sticking it out until you've taken a Data Structures course, one of the harder, more important courses out there. If you're not understanding the material or just aren't having fun with it, it’s definitely ok to switch majors/careers. Otherwise, CS just might be the career for you! Give it your best shot!
Admittedly, it's hard to provide stronger insight to overcoming Imposter Syndrome, as I am afflicted by it as well. For me, my IS derives from constantly comparing myself to others and confusing inexperience with incompetency. As such, I continue to work and focus on myself and take baby steps towards smaller goals I set out for myself. Knowing that I've put the effort to improve myself by just 1% everyday has made me a lot more confident.
  1. Those who know for a fact CS is for them – The diamonds in the rough. Learning and practicing CS material gives them a euphoric high.
Advice: Broaden your scope and learn new areas of CS! Who knows, you might find another new field that you really want to work in. Other than that, definitely make new friends regardless of whether they’re a CS major or not. Even try pursuing other hobbies like weightlifting, reading, dancing, or even public speaking. Don't limit yourself!

Freshman Year

We recommend not taking more than 3-4 classes in your first quartesemester, as you shouold keep an ample amount of time to go to professional/social events, make new friends and hang out with them, and pursue your interests.
We've seen a lot of freshmen (and upperclassmen) CS folks get cooped up in their dorm rooms playing video games and watching TV. We understand that these two are a passion for many, but please be cautious to not get consumed by them.
You have the privilege of pursuing higher education, making valuable connections/memories, and setting up your CS career in the trajectory you want. This year is the best year to take advantage of all that university has to offer; make the most of it.
One of the best ways to get involved in your school’s/region’s CS community is by joining clubs like ACM and WICS and participating in hackathons (see ‘Hackathon’ section below). Try pursuing internships and positions in these organizations and events as well!
One, major issue we see with freshmen (even upperclassmen) is their ignorance on all the avenues available in the CS Industry. So we’ve tried to narrow it down (not exhaustive).

As a freshman, definitely take the time and see if you can picture yourself doing any of the listed fields. You should open yourself to all facets of CS and not just the “hot field” like Data Science and Machine Learning. Choosing a field because it’s “exciting” will usually lead to bad results as usually, other people are thinking just like you and will lead to over-saturation.
Our recommendation is to select the top 5 fields that have piqued your interest and experiment with the field. For example, if you are interested in Mobile App Development, try learning how to build an Android app from the ground up. A simple weather app or alarm clock is completely suitable for a first project/prototype. This lets you understand what skills you would need for this field and can serve as a forecast as to what your career would look like.
You should definitely look for an internship. Ignore the people that tell you to wait until you’re a junior, as it’s going to be very hard to get an internship if you don’t have any experience. Common places that most students don’t realize are available are usually IT departments at your school and even research with professors. Researching is highly recommended as you can definitely learn more about a field you can be interested in and if you’re interested in graduate school, that’s going to be a letter of recommendation that you can ask for.
If you’re considered a minority in Computer Science, look into first and second year internship programs as they’re meant to help you succeed. Here’s some programs that come to mind:

Facebook University
Another way to get internships is to research into smaller companies in your area. If the company is very small (<100 employees), consider reaching out to the CEO on LinkedIn. They might be able to help you! Also, take advantage of university recruiting websites like Handshake to see companies that directly hire from your school. Sophomore Year

Now that you have basic programming knowledge, create your own website or GitHub account and start contributing to them with small personal projects. Nobody expects you to make a full-stack MERN project hosted and scaled on AWS at this stage. Focus instead on clean code, learning a framework or two on a language you like, and creating a small, robust feature. Grow from there!
If you weren’t able to find an internship/research opportunity as a freshman, community involvement, projects, and hackathons become especially important, as they are a great way to make you stand out on your resume and to recruiters when you reapply. As you brush up on your skills, apply again, and try your luck out.

Data Structures and Algorithms

In addition, you are most likely to take a Data Structures and Algorithms course this year. Make sure you are focusing on this class and writing good notes; you will need this knowledge when interviewing for internships and full-time jobs in the near future. Here is a link to our DS and A course (in C++) for reference

Junior Year

As a junior, companies are more willing to hire you for an internship, as they are likely to convert you into a full-time employee after graduating. This transition process is much easier than interviewing, and they'll usually offer you a higher compensation package if they want to convert you to a full-time employee. As you now should have knowledge of Data Structures and Algorithms, we highly recommend looking into coding interview prep sites like LeetCode and HackerRank or purchasing a prep book like CTCI or EPI (advanced).
Continue to attend hackathons, remain active in clubs/organizations, and grow your portfolio.
Classes will be much harder; expect the time for completing projects to double and the content covered to be much more difficult. We recommend taking no more than 2-3 upper-division CS courses and balancing your load with 1-2 GE classes. You should not be taking more than 16 units (assuming 4 units per course).
Start to get an idea of what field in CS you would like to pursue. Research what it takes to be successful in that field. You can do so by looking up job postings with that title on LinkedIn and looking at the requested skill set or take a look at Roadmap.sh. If you want to learn more about a related skill set and your school doesn't offer a course, consider picking up a class on udemy.com.

Senior Year

Focus heavily on your senior capstone, project classes, etc. as they're the last thing you can put on your resume before applying for full time. By now, you should have at least 3 polished, working projects on your GitHub that you can easily talk about with your recruiter. Preferably, they're aligned with the CS field you wish to enter.
If you were able to get a return offer from an internship, congrats! However, don’t immediately sign the offer. Once you have an offer, you should still try to interview at companies that you’re interested in by the deadline of the time to accept the offer. A good way of doing this is to reach out to a University recruiter for that company and explain the deadline you have. Usually, they’re really helpful and can potentially help skip interviews that you were supposed to do!
In addition, if your friends were able to intern at places you’re interested in, definitely ask for a referral or to send your resume to their recruiter. This usually reduces the risk of being ghosted by that company and increases your chances of getting hired!
Once you finally sign, definitely take the time to relax and enjoy. Just make sure you pass your classes and stay out of trouble

How do I succeed in these classes?

rishiss: You’re more than likely coughing up hundreds, if not thousands, to attend university. It makes no sense to not take full advantage of the course and course staff.
The way I take notes: I learn from examples; I want to enter my code into the IDE to see what happens. I do a three way split; Google Docs on the left, IDE on top right and terminal (to compile, see output, make new file, etc) on bottom left. I note down the date and topic of the lecture and write questions I have in the comments on Docs. I make sure to highlight important information and possible test questions. I even share the link with friends!

In the quarters where I followed the steps above, I never got a grade lower than an A-.

Dealing with Bad Professors

During your time in college, you’re likely going to have at least one bad professor that might make it worse if you have to go to class. If that’s the case, it’s definitely fine to not go to class (as long as it’s not mandatory). However, if you do decide not to go, you must make sure you learn the material, so you won’t be behind on the coursework and studying for tests. In addition, you should be doing something productive on the side. If you don’t go to class and spend the time watching Netflix or playing video games, you’re losing time that you can spend on something that might be fun and can help you in the long run.

You can take Graduate Courses!?

chaitu65c: A highly underutilized set of courses you can take would be graduate courses. Graduate courses are usually very specialized in certain fields. If you were able to take all the undergraduate courses you wanted and still have spare classes to fill out, I'd recommend researching into taking Graduate courses! They’re a good way to build out your specialization and learn new, cool stuff! In addition, if you’re looking for classes to reach the required number of CS courses needed, your CS department might allow you to make the course count towards your degree!

Projects

They're super important.

How do I succeed in class projects?

Personal Projects and your CS Career

rishiss: Projects are your saving grace, especially if you are lacking work experience. They show technical aptitude, willingness to take initiative, and leadership. I’ve seen people with only projects on their resume get positions at the Big N. Projects are good ways to expand your knowledge of CS as the possibilities are endless! It is best to have a variety of projects dealing with a variety of technologies. As such, you can open yourself up to more positions and have more talking points during the interview.
I tend to edit the ‘Project’ Section of my resume with relevant projects and technologies. For instance, if I made a full stack web application and applied to a DevOps organization, I would highlight my AWS, CI/CD, and Terraform experiences more than my React/Node js work.
It is recommend the project is about something that motivates you and are passionate about e.g. video games, movies, books, sports, etc., as it is very easy to give up half way due to stress or lack of motivation/interest.
Like anything else in Computer Science, projects require you to break it down into smaller pieces. Start with the end in mind and draw out the intended architecture/functionalities. Start with what you know and research on the parts you don't know after that. You will be using these skills often in industry for any project/feature planning.
Spending 15-30 minutes a day is all you need to make a successful personal project. Don't make excuses and get coding!

Open Source Contributions

If you’ve ever noticed popular github repositories such as torvalds/linux, these are repositories where people from all over the world can report issues with it and someone can fix it. If you are able to make a contribution to a huge open source repository, it looks really good on your resume.

Hackathons

What are Hackathons?

Hackathons are large scale coding events, where students from around the area come together and collaborate - usually in teams of 4 (but you can go solo or with a partner!) - to build some software. Companies like Amazon, Northrop Grumman, Google, and Twilio sponsor awards related to best use of their technology. After 24 - 48 hours of intensive coding, participants submit their projects, whether it be an Android video game, Chrome Extension, productivity web app, etc. Submissions are shared with the companies and other hackathon organizers, where they select the best projects and award teams with swag like keyboards, gift cards, and even summer internships at their company.
Participating in hackathons are one of the best ways to hone your coding skills, network with companies and other students, and get free comfy T-shirts. It is also one of the best ways to gain industry knowledge, as representatives from these companies and hackathon organizers create numerous workshops and answer any questions you may have. Winning awards at these hackathons are also great resume boosters and talking points during interviews.
The biggest hackathon organizer is Major League Hacking. Visit their website, and you can see all the hackathons (remote or local) they are partnered with. Make to be on the lookout for application release dates from the hackathons and apply early.
With Covid, you may miss out on the free goodies and the in-person networking with students and professionals. However, most hackathons are accepting many more applicants due to it being virtual/remote this year.

What Should I Do At Hacakathons?

Take advantage of the resources available at hackathons. You’re attending a mini CS conference and should be, besides coding, networking with professionals, learning about the different companies, attending workshops, asking technical/non-technical questions to mentors, and getting as much free shit as you can get. Besides T-Shirts, companies give out vouchers to their services, applications to their internship and full-time positions, pillows, notebooks, water bottles, sweaters, and even backpacks.
If you’re looking to get an award, judges at hackathons care a lot about the pitch and the idea rather than the actual execution of the idea. Having an idea beforehand is also helpful, so you can spend your time focusing on the MVP.

Friends and Networking

chaitu65c: I think it’s definitely useful if you have two different friend groups: One dedicated to career and Non-Career Group.
Career Group - When making a friend group dedicated to career, try to be the dumbest person in the group, you’re definitely going to learn a lot from them as you soak up knowledge! Best ways of meeting friends who are career-driven can be through major specific orientation (actually how I met rishiss), courses, major related clubs, etc.
Non-Career Group - While having a group that motivates you for your career is important, it’s also important to have another friend group that can help you relax and to enjoy your time! A really good way to find these friend groups can be anywhere from your hall to General Education courses, social clubs like Circle K, fraternities/ sororities(if that’s your cup of tea) and others!
This is what has worked for us; no need to follow this exact format.

rishiss: Here are the few take-aways on writing a resume that gets through the ATS.

Searching for Internships

Searching for internships in CS is really different and harder from searching for internships in other professions. CS internship interview processes are often longer and much more technical on what you have learned as a CS major. We've prepped 2-3 months beforehand on CS concepts, whiteboarding, etc.

Timeline

This timeline primarily focuses on large, non-government/defense companies or competitive startups. This also assume you are applying for a summer internship.
August - September: Applications are opened to the public. Make sure to look out for positions and apply early, as most companies admit students on a rolling basis. A site that we used often is Apply.fyi. After applying, you may receive an automated (< 48 hours) invitation to complete an Online Assessment, consisting of multiple choice and/or coding questions about Data Structures, Algorithms, and Run Time Complexity. You will have usually 1-2 weeks to complete the assessment. Please that you may be rejected if you are not able to pass 90% of the questions on the assessment: Please also note that you may be instantly rejected due to things out of your control like years of experience, cancellation of internship, internal corporate issues, and more. Don't take rejections too seriously; just keep applying!
October - November: After passing the resume screen and the OA, you will be contacted by the company's recruiter for a phone screen. During the screen, you will probably be asked a few confirmation questions about your resume, sponsorship, years of experience with X, etc. and minor behavioral questions like what made you apply for this position, what are you pursuing outside of class, etc. You may also receive questions about your CS fundamentals e.g. what is a hashtable, whats the difference between a process and a thread, what is the runtime complexity of sorting a string, etc. As long as you're cool and confident (and not cringe/edgy), this part should be a breeze.
November - Mid January: If you made it through the two Thanos snaps, you will be invited to an onsite “Power-Day,” where interviewees attend 2-4 whiteboard interviews while being grilled on their technical skills and projects. Some companies make applicants go through a panel interview, where a team of 2-5 Software Engineers grill you on technical questions and your resume. You are often pampered with free travel, food, stipends, etc.
December - February: If you were deemed a good fit by the hiring committee, you will be extended an offer to intern at the company during the upcoming summer for 10-12 weeks. Remember, nothing is final until you receive an offer letter in your inbox. Some companies may also place you on a wait-list and offer you a spot if someone were to reject their offer letter.
For government orgs, defense companies, and smaller organizations, the recruiting season starts in February/March and usually ends in April and May. After applying online and passing the resume screen, you will usually be immediately pushed to an on-site interview. Most likely, you will be interviewing with your future boss/co-worker.
Please note that internships are not only offered in the summer, they are provided in the Fall, Winter, and Spring (rare) as well. The competition for these internships is usually lower, and the process usually starts 3-4 months beforehand.

How to get the Interview

Besides following resume tips, make sure to apply to as many places as you can. To get our first internships, we recall applying to approximately 250-300 places before we secured our internship plans for that summer. Also, if you do get ghosted, don’t take it personally, usually, university recruiters often spend so much time reviewing a lot of applications.
Other precautions to take to get noticed are to try attending career fairs if you can, you might be able to get an interview(worst case, free swag!). Other than that, try reaching out to upperclassmen or friends you know that interned and ask for referrals. It’s one of the best ways to get noticed!

What to expect

As part of the interview process, there’s 4 types of interviews that you should make sure you know.
Behavioral Interview: These interviews ask you questions about culture fit such as “Why are you a good candidate” and “Tell me about a time when you ...”
Coding/Technical Interview: These interviews ask you questions similar to what you see on Leetcode and Hackerrank. These interviews are designed to test your Data Structures and Algorithms knowledge.
System Design: System Design involves the interviewer testing your building to design a service/software and test your knowledge of understanding what things to use for the task and how you will integrate them together. You’re definitely not expected to know this and it’s not likely you’re gonna get asked this. Places that could ask you this are Unicorns, Trading Companies and Hedge Funds, and Big Established Companies.
Concurrency/Low Level Interviews: If the company’s biggest product involves low level principles such as networking principles and kernel stuff, there’s a possibility you can get asked this. Places that come to mind are hardware companies and trading firms.
Some companies may adopt only one of these interviews and some may adopt all.

How to Ace the Interview

It’s highly recommended that you look up the interview experiences that other students have faced so that you can potentially filter out companies with red flags and know what questions to expect. Common sources to search up on this would be Reddit (csMajors and cscareerquestions), Jumpstart (Relatively new portal for students), Glassdoor and maybe Blind (Aside from the toxic TC or GTFO culture, they do give good advice on interviews). With that said, here’s some advice we have when you approach each kind of interview we’ve seen.

Advice on Behavioral Interviews

Use the STAR method when describing your experiences. Being quantifiable with the impact of your actions will impress the interviewer.

Advice on Technical Interviews

Begin by reviewing your notes from the Data Structures and Algorithms class. Do not proceed further until you know how to implement these DS and As from scratch with the language of your choice(If you do know python, it’s recommended as there’s a lot of builtin features!). After doing so, we highly recommend a book like CTCI and EPI to gain a review on programming language details and your DS and As. Then, visit sites like LeetCode to practice real questions from major companies. A Facebook Engineer completed 600 LC problems and compiled the most important ones into a list here. During the interview, make sure to talk out loud about possible approaches and tradeoffs before whiteboarding. It is perfectly acceptable (often recommended) to ask the interviewer to ask questions about the problem and get clarification. Once you have an idea in mind and have talked about it with your interviewer, begin whiteboarding. While you talk about the final idea you want to use, write out pseudo code and comments about all the steps you need to implement in order to finish coding your solution. After that, start coding. Make sure to have proper function headers, syntax, spacing, classes/structs, imports, etc. After coding your solution, give a brief explanation and attempt to make it run with less space and in less time (if your solution is not as efficient as you think it can be).

Advice on System Design

These are somewhat hard to approach if you don’t have experience ever doing it. If you do have experience designing and building services in your spare time and as part of your work experience, definitely rely on your experience. An important thing is to definitely ask clarifying questions. There might be hidden requirements you didn’t think about that could drastically change the way you approach the solution.

Advice on Concurrency/Low level

Understand basic principles such as Processes vs Threads (A lot of people don’t know the difference!)TCP vs UDP and how to make an application thread safe. Other than that, it’s recommended that you familiarize yourself with basic OS concepts such as Deadlocks, locks that you can utilize to make an application thread safe, etc.

Searching for Full Time Jobs:

The big bucks.
The process for finding a Full-Time Job is usually very similar to finding an Internship. There’s three main differences are:
  1. Harder Questions. Ex: Google usually asks Leetcode Mediums to Hards + the special Leetcode Hard question that Google asks it’s applicants (they create a new one every year).
  2. More Rounds of Interviewing: For example, Microsoft makes interns do 2 rounds while New Grads do 4 rounds during the onsite part of the process.
  3. Compensation: Interns usually get an hourly rate and, possibly, a housing stipend. New grads, however, are given a yearly salary and, possibly, a sign-on bonus, stocks, and benefits e.g. health insurance, vacation days, etc.
The process for finding a Full-time Job won’t really change as much as finding an internship, but keep in mind that the bar is higher. This is probably the biggest reason why you should look into interning early; by getting an offer at the place you like, you don’t need to go through the daunting process of finding a full-time role.
Get as many offers as you can this time around, so you can negotiate and select the position, company, compensation, and location that works best for you.

Negotiation

Negotiation is a really powerful tool that you can use in the interview process, even as an intern. There’s a lot of guides to negotiation and we recommend Nick Singh’s guide (Look at his LinkedIn and newsletters) for more.

Final Thoughts

University is a probably the most important time of your life and a foundational block of your CS Career. Like any foundation, it must be sturdy and takes a tremendous amount and energy of time to develop. Take advantage of all the resources (like this one) you can get your hands on. Definitely learn from the mistakes people have made and make sure you don’t repeat the same mistakes.

I had a surgical abortion two weeks ago as of tomorrow. My post op is early next week and until then I can’t have penetrative sex. I will be able to once I get the okay from my doctor but honestly... I really feel like I never want to have sex again. The man I accidentally got pregnant with is not really in the picture. We weren’t really dating before the abortion and we both mutually feel that we are not comfortable with pursuing a romantic relationship for the time being at least. We both need time alone to work on ourselves and process. If I wanted to, I’m sure he would be okay with having sex with me again but it’s so scary now. I imagine it is for him too because this is his first time experiencing getting a woman pregnant and having her terminate it but (not to seem selfish but also kind of) I have real trauma from the pregnancy itself and the procedure that he was not there for at all or experienced himself. I’m scared I will never be able to have sex again.
But I still have a sex drive and at some point in my life I want to enjoy having sex. Now that I know I am capable of being pregnant and have gone through the process of an abortion. I really don’t want to do either ever again. So now sex is taboo in my brain when before it definitely was not. I am a pretty sexual person and sex was something I really enjoyed. Now it has become a point of anxiety and fear for me.
Maybe I need more time. It’s still very soon after the abortion. Im just scared that I will never be able to be physically intimate again. I have health anxiety about becoming ill on a normal day and now pregnancy has become something I can “catch”. Even if I go out and wear a mask or even if I have sex with a condom, it doesnt completely protect me from catching a virus or becoming pregnant. Now that the chance is there (whereas before I floated in blissful ignorance that it would never happen to me or that I’m somehow infertile) I cant see any other way other than abstinence.
I have masturbated clitorally a few times post surgery. It’s actually been a helpful release of anxiety and pent of grief. I was struggling with some body dysmorphia right after because I had gained some weight, was bloated and just felt shitty as a woman. I felt like only a vessel for life and disgusted at what my own body what capable of. Of course I have known that pregnancy was always possible but I had evaded it without hormonal contraceptive and only condoms since I started having sex at 16 (I am 27 now). Now I feel like everything is starting to level out with hormones and my body. I’m returning to the way I felt and looked before pregnancy. The dysmorphia isn’t as prevalent and I’m even starting to feel a bit sexy again. But the thought engaging in any sort of penetrative sex in the future is terrifying. I’m also worried that any male partner I may have in the future wont be understanding enough of my limitations if I’m not willing to have penetrative sex.
Has anyone else experienced this? What have you done to overcome it? Any experience is welcome. Thanks for reading my vent/rant.

ThowRA - Apologies for the formatting, this is my first reddit post and I’ve had to create a throw away account as my fiancé knows my other account. Please bare with me.
So for a little bit of background, I have recently given birth to a beautiful baby girl, she is now 4 months old. My fiancé and I have been together for 6 years and are very happy. My fiancé has a strange family dynamic, his mom is bipolar and left him to be brought up by his dad when he was two years old. Although they have had contact, they’ve never been particularly close until we got together. Since we have been together, we have involved her more in our life (going for meals, chatting on the phone etc) she’s always seemed pretty nice to me but I have heard horror stories from other members of the family which I put down to her early struggles with her mental health (now seems under control with meds and therapist).
Just after Christmas his mom told us she had met a man from one of her hobby groups and was dating. We didn’t think anything of it and she didn’t really mention him. When I gave birth, she came to see the baby at least two times( abiding to the countries rules) and everything seemed normal. However about 2 months a go, she messaged my partner to tell him that the police had contacted her, to inform her that her new boyfriend had a history of child sex abuse and she had ended it with him. We later found out that due to her having a few young grandchildren, they warned her that if she carried on seeing him, then they would have to involve social services and she would have to tell her family (this was happening during the time she was visiting us - we had no idea). She told the police that she’s ended it. Well the police visited him and saw her sitting in his garden. She hadn’t ended it so they said the family had to be told and social services would be involved.
So after speaking to her and the police, we told her we could not have any relationship with her unless she ended it with this monster. She therefore told the family that she was extremely sorry, she would put her kids first and had ended it. I told my partner, that I wasn’t sure if she could be trusted, we agreed that she will never be left alone with our child but we would continue to see her.
About a month later, my SIL messaged me to tell me that my MIL was still dating this man. Apparently, she had carried on dating him and posting it all over fb but had hidden her family from the posts. This time however she had forgotten to hide my SIL. I was absolutely fuming, she not only carried on seeing him but lied and was so sneaky. Potentially we could have had our child babysat by my MIL and not known this monster was there (which would not have happened due to our agreement). What worried me more, was if she was showing him pictures of my child!!
With these recent developments, I have cut off all contact with her and deleted/ blocked her from all my social media. The family also did the same but after a lot of back and forth, his MIL has gotten incredibly upset, blamed her mental illness (wrongly or rightly who knows) and promised it is now over for good. The family have forgiven her. I just can’t forgive her, I can’t trust her and I want no contact with her and especially don’t want her to see my daughter.
My fiancé believes that she has ended things, has realised that she could lose her family and has definitely ended it. He thinks I should be more forgiving and trusting of her. He doesn’t want our daughter to grow up without a grandma as her grandfathers are terminally ill. He is also worried if we go NC, she could do something terrible and it could aggravate her mental health issues. I just think after all the lies, she cannot be trusted and I do not want any harm to come to my daughter. Do you think I am right to go NC?
TLDR - MIL lied two times about seeing a child sex offender, I would like to cut off contact but my fiancé thinks I should forgive. Am I right?

I am interviewing for two jobs in different fields tomorrow and have been doing research for what I should bring up. I wanted to ask this sub if there were anything they knew that I should bring up in the interview. I have 3 years of experience doing employment placement for the state of Georgia's vocational rehabilitation agency. I also had 4 years previous of wireless sales experience with various Verizon premium retailers with 2 years of management in there as well.

• Participate as an Office of Supportive Housing team member in the provision of program monitoring for approximately 30 GHVP and Bridge Funding providers statewide. • Conduct annual Fidelity Reviews for all GHVP and Bridge Funding providers. To aid in making quick and consistent responses to alleged violations of the Return to Work on Campus policy, MIT will follow a new process, summarized below. This new process (Touchstone login required) applies to allegations against faculty and staff; a similar expedited Committee on Discipline process is in place for allegations against students.
The key provisions are:
Expedited review process
All complaints of alleged violations of the Return to Work on Campus policy are forwarded to the Manager of Institutional Compliance at [email protected]. The Manager of Institutional Compliance, in consultation with the OGC and others, will work with the DLC to find facts and appropriately respond. The alleged violator will be informed and given an opportunity to respond. Decision making
Low-level violations: DLC will determine appropriate response and/or sanction. Other violations: By faculty, other academic, postdoctoral, or research staff: Provost or VP for Research, in consultation with the school dean, will determine response/sanctioning. By other staff: VP for HR will determine response/sanctioning. Guidelines for Response/Sanctions
The decision maker – the DLC, Provost, VP for Research, or VP for Human Resources – will refer to the following guidelines when determining the response/sanctions. That said, each case is unique, and these guidelines are not prescriptive; they are intended to offer a basis from which to make a decision about a case.
